Focus RS Mk3: The Ultimate Buying Guide
Everything you need to check before buying a Focus RS Mk3, including the head gasket issue, common faults, and what to pay.

The Focus RS Mk3
The third-generation Focus RS is one of the greatest hot hatches ever made. With 350bhp, all-wheel drive, and a drift mode that actually works, it's a genuine performance car.
But there are things you need to know before buying one.
The Head Gasket Issue
This is the big one. Early RS Mk3s (2016-2017) suffered from a head gasket failure that could lead to coolant mixing with oil. Ford issued a recall and fitted revised gaskets, but you MUST check:
- Has the recall been completed? (Check with a Ford dealer using the VIN)
- Is there any mayo under the oil cap?
- Is the coolant level dropping?
- Has the car been overheated?
Other Common Issues
- Rear wheel bearing — Known to fail, especially on lowered cars
- Clutch — The dual-mass flywheel can fail on high-mileage examples
- Turbo actuator — Can stick on early cars
What to Pay (2026)
| Condition | Mileage | Price Range |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | Under 20k | £32,000 - £38,000 |
| Good | 20-40k | £27,000 - £32,000 |
| Average | 40-60k | £23,000 - £27,000 |
Our Advice
Buy the best one you can afford. Check the head gasket recall status first. A well-maintained RS Mk3 with the recall completed is a fantastic car that's only going to appreciate in value.
